Red Fort is a historic fort in Delhi. The Red Fort Complex was built by Mughal Emperor of India, Shah Jahan. The Red Fort has an area of 254.67 acres enclosed by 2.41 kilometres of defensive walls. The fort’s artwork synthesises Persian, European and Indian art, resulting in a unique Shahjahani style rich in form, expression and colour. Red Fort is one of the building complexes of India encapsulating a long period of history and its arts. The Red Fort’s innovative planning and architectural style, including the garden design, strongly influenced later buildings and gardens in Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra. Every year on the Independence day of India (15 August), the Prime Minister hoists the Indian “tricolour flag” at the main gate of the fort and delivers a nationally broadcast speech from its ramparts.
It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 as part of the Red Fort Complex.
It might take half a day in Red fort to explore as it has plenty inside. If I remember it right , we spent around 2 hours in Red fort to explore as it required to walk a long stretch inside the fort.
Prominent Structures within the Fort
Though as many as 66 % of the structures within the fort were either destroyed or badly damaged, the Red Fort still houses many historic edifices and some prominent ones are listed below –
- Mumtaz Mahal
- Khas Mahal
- Rang Mahal
- Hira Mahal
- Moti Masjid
- Hammam
